easy, effective
After a decade or so of digital living, my files were a mess. Multiple copies of everything, sometimes with different names, scattered across multiple platforms and many many hard drives. I bought a Qnap NAS storage unit and dumped everything on it, which provided a backup in case of hard drive failure, then bought and ran Duplicate Finder. Literally hundreds of GB of duplicate files were found! I used the smart interface to choose which I wanted to keep, and deleted the rest from within the program. Easy!
For huge amounts of data (3+ TB), the program can take time to go through everything, because it uses checksum software to ensure that files are the same, regardless of name. This is a great benefit, because even two files with different names that match are tagged as duplicates for you to look at. Smart.
The layout allows you to quickly filter between files of different size groups to work on the largest problems first. It takes time to go through all the duplicates it finds if there are a lot, but each file takes very little time to figure out which to keep (a second or two as a user to choose).
Works and looks great on my retina display.
So simple, so useful! What software should be.
