The Duplicate Finder App Reviews

Very good tool

Thanks for making this free for a litlte while. This is indeed a very useful and simple to use tool. If there was a 6th start, I’ll give it to you guys without thinking.

Can’t move to trash or delete anything

Always when I try to move to trash there is a message: "The Duplicate Finder was unable to move this file to Trash. Do you want to delete it permanently?” them I select “Delete” and the file is not deleted. In this case the program displays a message: “Failed to Delete Files: The Duplicate Finder was unable to permanently delete some files. Please check their permission for succesful removal. The files are left in your selection list.”. So almost completely useless :(

Good finding - no help with selecing instances to remove

The tool looks solid when searching and finding duplicates in one or more locations! Unfortunately it then offers no help to select the files to remove. This could be done by describing who preferred paths look like and/or where never to delete. Ideally a list of path-REGEXs sorted in the priority for keep/delete. Unfortunately I cant find the option to replace file by a link instead of deleting it completely. Workaround: "Export results" (to csv with "Group-ID;selected;path" fields) - a little scripting with grep & awk & xargs should help around both weaknesses (at least the "delete only in preferred places" should be easy - yet not as easy as some GUI update)

Simply amazing

Super-easy to use and straightforward. And most importantly powerful. Totally recommended.

Does not work with Photos library

I needed it to find the duplicate photos in my Photos library, it did not work, it said there were no duplicates.

Great App!

Works great. Simply, easy to understand interface and saved me over 100GB of space on my first scan of my backup drive.

Finds duplicate files really well

Ive wanted an app like this for a long time. Already, it has saved me gigabytes of space in my home folder, thanks to it finding duplicate back-up archives in different folders. I havent yet set it lose on my network-shared music, video, and photo folders, but now Im looking forward to the process. A great idea, and a nice implementation.

Does what it says but no retina display support

I like the functionality but only give the app two stars because it appears granulated on the retina display. All apps should support this display by now.

Save Time..

Geat app,easy to use.

does the trick

wow - i have been meaning to do some ‘spring cleaning’ on my computer for years now. this takes the guess work out of it and makes the job really simple. the app does one thing and does it very well.

Simply the best

I just used mine for the first time and it was very simple and easy to use. It cleared about 8 GB. Very impressive. Money worth spent.

It works, but has issues

It does what it advertises, but, has issues: 1. It over reports duplicate file sizes. The reported sizes include both the original and duplicate(s). So, in my case it nearly doubled the reported amount of wasted disk space. 2. The usability for this app is very poor. I much prefer Gemini (also on the app store), but Gemini doesn’t handle hard links, so I bought this instead. Unfortunately, this app still counts hardlinks as duplicates. I was confused by which file would get deleted, because often selecting a file caused the placement of the file to change, forcing me to double check that I did indeed select the correct file.

Worked very well

Application installed easily and quickly. Run it and found 10 Gigs worth of redundant files. All were identified and easy to proceed with clean up. Good app

Great and simple.

Simply great and efficient.

easy, effective

After a decade or so of digital living, my files were a mess. Multiple copies of everything, sometimes with different names, scattered across multiple platforms and many many hard drives. I bought a Qnap NAS storage unit and dumped everything on it, which provided a backup in case of hard drive failure, then bought and ran Duplicate Finder. Literally hundreds of GB of duplicate files were found! I used the smart interface to choose which I wanted to keep, and deleted the rest from within the program. Easy! For huge amounts of data (3+ TB), the program can take time to go through everything, because it uses checksum software to ensure that files are the same, regardless of name. This is a great benefit, because even two files with different names that match are tagged as duplicates for you to look at. Smart. The layout allows you to quickly filter between files of different size groups to work on the largest problems first. It takes time to go through all the duplicates it finds if there are a lot, but each file takes very little time to figure out which to keep (a second or two as a user to choose). Works and looks great on my retina display. So simple, so useful! What software should be.

Just what I’ve been looking for

Seems to be a great app. It is so hard to find duplicates on a Mac becasue of all of the Aliases used. Hope it lives up to my expectations

Not just ‘sort’ of fantastic.

This is a very well designed and very functional app. I have saved myself MONTHS using this. I had almost 2000GB of RAW photos and files to sort. I feel confident trusting this application to not mistakenly delete non-duplicates. It reads/listens to/looks at all the files and creates a mathematically generated string of characters.. a fingerprint. I have waded through hundreds of it’s choices… it has never failed me. HIGHLY recommended.. also.. I purchased several other ‘sorting’ apps.. but this is the only one I use. FEATURE SUGGESTION: PLEASE allow drag and drop into the post sort window without forcing me to click on ’new sort’. It’s a GUI error as far as I’m concerned. It’s counter intuitive. I have lost track of the number of times I’ve had to drop my selection of folders… go to the app and click new sort to get back to the folder drop window. Why do you even need that window? If you drag folders into the application.. clearly you want to reset and sort them. The drag and drop action SHOULD produce the same result as the “new sort" button. In fact.. if there are zero files it should accept new files automatically as a new sort.

SWEEET!!!

I have been able to reclaim over 450 GB on 3 drives!!! Super easy, no muss no fuss.

Fantastic

This is a very nicely crafted application. It’s fast, clean, simple, and easy to use, with a beautiful interface. I especially like the preview pane to look at duplicate photos and feel satisfied that they are indeed identical. The only improvement, for me, would be the addition of any extra info about the files that might be useful. A duplicate photo, for example, could display its dimensions and resolution, along with the file size that is already being displayed. Even without however, this app is excellent.

Actually works

Tried duplicate detective which does have a better user interface. But since it doesn’t actually delete anything I had to buy Duplicate Finder. It does find the duplicates. Faster too. And it will actually delete the files and not simply find them. Almost all files it found were duplicates that I wanted deleted. Only a few errors. Would recommend.
